Saturday November 2, Schiehallion,

Geal Charn, Kinloch Rannoch.

Schiehallion is well known for its graceful form and isolation and is a distant feature from many viewpoints.

The route below climbs from the W and we are travelling to the start by public transport, avoiding the 150 mile drive there and back. Meet at Fort William Station in good time to buy return tickets for the 7.44am departure to Rannoch Station. From here we take the Dial-a-Bus E to Kinloch Rannoch, to alight at the start at East Tempar at about 9.40am.

Start at E Tempar on the minor road, 3km E of Kinloch Rannoch, NN690575. Head S on the track on the E side of the Tempar Burn and follow it to its end below the grouse butts.

Follow the line of butts NE uphill, beyond which the ground steepens. Continue on the same heading, avoiding crags to reach the spur at the foot of Schiehallion’s summit ridge. Turn ESE and climb it to the top.

Retrace steps to the spur and follow the NW ridge down to regain the track at about 500m alt.

Return to the start in time to board the bus at 1425.

If the time available for this walk seems insufficient, the nearby Corbett Top of Geal Charn, 792m offers a pleasant alternative walk:

Head W back along the public minor for 400m and turn S at NN687575 on to a track that leads uphill on the W side of the Tempar Burn. Follow the track up to its end at a ruin at 750m alt. The summit of Geal Charn lies 250m SW.

Train fare depends on rail card held. Bus costs £7 each return. Train dep Rannoch Station at 1512, arr Fort William at 1609.
