Youth cash boost for Care Lochaber
Last month saw the team representing Care Lochaber win the Youth Philanthropy Initiative (YIP) competition at Lochaber High School.
The win will give Care Lochaber, which provides community transport in the area, a donation of £3,000.
The YPI is an active citizenship programme that empowers young people to make a difference in their local communities while learning new skills.
Every year, each participating school is responsible for providing a £3,000 donation to a local charity through a unique programme of teamwork, research and competition.
The initiative currently takes place in 275 Scottish secondary schools and was introduced to Scotland by The Wood Foundation in 2008. Since then, around £4 million has been channelled into community-based charities championed by young people.
Care Lochaber's Community Car Scheme provides a door-to-door driving service for people who cannot access public transport.
The aim is to enable people who are older, disabled, experiencing ill health, have mobility difficulties or who feel isolated, to maintain their independence, health and wellbeing.
The charity particularly wants to help those without extended family support and to fill the gaps where no other services exist.
Charity manager Lara Van de Peer said: ‘We are absolutely delighted that the YPI team representing Care Lochaber was successful in its recent presentation at Lochaber High School.
'Tamzin, Faye and Laura did an amazing job and presented confidently about what the charity does and how it will benefit from the money.
‘We are very grateful to the team, and to The Wood Foundation, for the £3,000 contribution – the money will go towards volunteer training and expenses.'
