-

Friendly match

The revitalised Kinlochleven FC, under the stewardship of Matthew Prosser and John Trew, took on a youthful Mallaig AFC side mainly made up of under-18s in Kinlochleven last week.

In atrocious weather, Mallaig did well to travel at all, bolstering their squad with veterans Angus Kennedy and Jamie MacGregor.

Kinlochleven took advantage early with Ross Maclean busy up front playing an excellent through ball to allow Sam Moffat to score with the most delicate of touches.

As the half moved on, Kinlochleven were awarded a corner and Ali Bain made the move up from the back. He made no mistake in planting his finish with aplomb.

The home side were moving the ball about well and both sides were doing their best to play attractive football despite the monsoon conditions.

Left back Gordon McCredie made several important interceptions and carried the ball out well, teaming up with Andy Heron on the left to fashion several decent opportunities.

Up front for Mallaig, the youthful pairing of Ewan and Ruaraidh were linking well with Andrew Sneddon at the head of their midfield but David Wilson in the Kinloch goal showed safe hands and was never overly troubled.

The third goal came courtesy of Mikey Maclean, the midfielder taking aim with cold-eyed calm to end the half 3-0 to the hosts.

As the second half kicked off, the visitors began to make their presence felt. First they pressured Kinlochleven and then they reduced the deficit with a smartly taken finish.

The next half saw the youngsters playing some smart football which meant that Bain especially had to be stout in defence.

Finally, Ross Maclean got the goal that his industry deserved as he surged into the box, collected a through ball from Maclean and lifted a finish past the the visitors’ keeper.

A final consolation goal for Mallaig left the score 4-2 in a well contested friendly played in the right spirit, against the odds.

Kinlochleven player/ manager Matthew Prosser said it was a good performance in only his side’s second game.

‘The organisation was better than before and we played some lovely football going forward.

‘We’re really grateful to Mallaig for even going ahead with the game in this weather and we’re looking forward to a return leg in January,’ said Prosser.
