Leading wildlife artist gives Resipole demonstration
Artist Colin Woolf’s incredible ‘pin feather art’ took centre stage at a weekend demonstration at Resipole Studios, Acharacle.
Working in oils and watercolours to create his amazingly detailed art, his fascinating technique of painting with feathers has helped Lochgilphead-based Colin gain widespread recognition as one of the UK’s leading wildlife and landscape artists.
Using tiny pin feathers from woodcocks, mounted in a specially-designed holder to create a tiny brush, he completes the entire painting using the feather before mounting it onto the painting itself to complete the work. The technique of painting with tiny feathers was one used by Victorian miniaturists who used to paint miniature portraits.
Colin learned of this style in the 1990s and has been working on perfecting this skill since.
Gallery manager Kerrie Robinson said: ‘Resipole Studios was delighted to welcome renowned landscape and wildlife artist Colin Woolf to the gallery to give a live painting demonstration.
‘Many visitors have been struck by the fine detail in Colin’s work, so it was wonderful they were able to witness his skill and technique as an artist first hand.
‘The artist’s visit brought to a close the largest exhibition of his work to date.’
Colin told the Lochaber Times: ‘Resipole Studios is the perfect place for an exhibition of landscape and wildlife art. I was thrilled to be invited to put on the exhibition. The whole experience has been amazing. There’s a lovely relaxed and welcoming atmosphere in the gallery and Andrew has created the perfect space for showcasing original artwork.
‘I’ve enjoyed putting my work here and I’ve enjoyed the ‘demo days’ that I’ve spent painting at the easel, meeting customers and chatting about my work.
‘The gallery is so perfectly placed. The whole of Ardnamurchan contains the most magnificent scenery and some of Scotland’s most beautiful wildlife. I never fail to be inspired whenever I come up here, in all seasons.’
Mulled wine and mince pies were served adding to the festive feeling at the event with visitors enjoying Colin’s demonstration along with the other exhibitions of work on display, including work by local artists Rob Fairley and Stephen French.
The exhibition runs at Resipole Gallery through the winter until March. YOURSTORY share with us: fort@obantimes.co.uk telephone 01397 703003
