Shining example of festive cheer

Every December, Maureen and Mike Drummond illuminate their guest house in Glencruitten Road with Christmas lights, much to the delight of passers-by and children, who stop them in the street to say it makes them feel happy.

For the past 12 years, a Glencruitten guest house has been entertaining children with its impressive festive display.

Every December, Maureen and Mike Drummond illuminate Glencruitten Road with their Christmas lights.

The impressive display started off with a row of lights around the building’s roof, but over the years they have built up the impressive array of decorations.

Maureen and Mike, who run High Cliff Guest House, say people stop them in the street to say it makes them feel happy.

Speaking to The Oban Times, Maureen said: ‘We do it for the sheer pleasure of the children. You see people stopping there and see them taking photographs and a lot of children think Santa lives in the house.’

And because of this, she added: ‘We will continue to do it as long as we can.’

Mike, who is tasked with decorating the outside of the house, said: ‘We have put a lot of effort into it. It took well over a week to put them up. There is only so much you can do in a day now.’ While Mike is in charge of erecting the lights, the couple do receive help to retrieve them from the loft and storage.

This year, D&K Lafferty gave them a helping hand, but previous years Reflections hairdressers have done their bit, as have friends and family.

While the couple would love to raise money with their festive display in aid of charity, Maureen said it would be dangerous with the house being next to a busy road.

However, she did say that parents and children are more than welcome to park in her driveway to view the house.
