Support in the pipe line for dynamic quartet
February is music month on the Victory Hall centenary calendar and a traditional treat, with a contemporary twist, has been arranged to boost the birthday celebrations.
Hot off the stage from Celtic Connections, Gnoss, a dynamic four-piece of fiddle, flute, guitar and percussion, will headline at the Benderloch venue on Friday February 14 with support from young pipers from the area.
With their energetic tunes and driving folk songs, Gnoss have earned a reputation for their ‘maturity of ability many of a greater age will envy’ – The Living Tradition.
As current and former students of the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, Orcadians Graham Rorie and Aidan Moodie, Connor Sinclair, from Crieff, and Craig Baxter from Stirling, have been tipped as ‘ones to watch’ by Songlines magazine.
‘The Victory Hall has a great reputation for gigs on the folk circuit, so we’re delighted to include our first visit on this upcoming tour,’ said Graham. ‘This is the first string of gigs we’ve done since we brought out the album last year. We can’t wait to share it.’
With their latest release, Drawn From Deep Water, being nominated for Album of the Year at the MG Alba Scots Trad Music Awards 2019, all eyes are firmly on this young quartet.
Complementing the headliners will be a group of pipers, led by Kate MacPherson, who should not require any introduction. Tutored by world champion piper Angus MacColl, the youngsters will be playing and sharing the stories of time spent in chanter and piping classes.
Victory Hall committee member Joy Cameron said: 'We are really excited about this performance for our centenary music-themed month.
'Gnoss have a tremendous reputation and we are delighted to welcome them to Benderloch while the pipers are known and appreciated by everyone in the area.
'Angus (MacColl) has taught many children over the years through regular classes in The Victory Hall, so it is fitting they are to play a role in our centenary celebrations.'
Tickets are £15 on the door or £13 in advance and can be reserved by phoning 01631 720247. Doors open at 7.30pm with the performance starting at 8pm.
