Leaping into packed day of events

February is usually one of the quickest months of the year, even when it has an extra day as it has this year.

I don’t know if it’s because of the extra day but an awful lot has been squeezed into February 29. Unfortunately, I’d like to go to all the events but can’t.

There is the Bon Giovi tribute act in the Corran Halls, the Rocky Horror Show fundraiser in the cinema and Lorne, the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s disco in the Argyllshire Gathering Halls, which is fundraising for the Dove Centre, and a quiz and chilli evening in Taynuilt, fundraising for the Macmillan Unit, as well as the Royal Rumpus in the Royal Hotel.

They all sound fantastic and are events I would normally attend but there’s only one of me and, with the best will in the world, I think I could only manage two in one evening.

This is one reason that the Town Diary exists.

When it was a physical diary, it was used to check what was happening on a given date to make sure events didn’t clash but that seems to have fallen by the wayside.

It is still possible though and a provisional date can be entered and confirmed by contacting the BID4Oban office. It would be fantastic to see this happening again. A quick check online or a phone call to the office and it can help make sure that your event doesn’t have to compete with too many others.

The other thing that caught my attention this week was a post on Facebook about the Bon Giovi band being concerned at a lack of ticket sales – and I understand their worry.

We have a bad habit in Oban of not buying tickets until the last minute and as a result we’ve had cancellations as the bands think no one is interested and are concerned about covering costs.

We really need to better support bands and events in Oban.

The more we do so, the more bands and other acts will be keen to come here – and I’ll still be complaining about having too many things on.
