Husband admits losing temper during assault

-

A man who assaulted his wife after accusing her of cheating with one of his friends appeared in court in Oban last week.

Charles Chamberlain, 37, of 230 Shuna Terrace, Soroba, pleaded guilty to assault causing severe injury but had his sentence deferred until March for reports when custody will also be considered. His bail was continued.

The court heard how Chamberlain’s wife had to go to hospital and have her wrist put in a plaster cast after the incident on January 3 this year.

Chamberlain had come home after a night drinking and woken up his wife to accuse her of cheating with one of her friends.

His claims were rubbished by his wife who tried to get away from him into the kitchen where she locked herself in. He tried to speak to her through the door and, when his wife got so worried it would disturb their children, she let him in but he became aggressive, accusing her of having affairs with different men.

The complainant put her hand up to ‘get him out of her face’ but he grabbed her and a struggle broke out. She tried to get free from him but it ended with her falling backwards and striking a cupboard door.

The woman then went into the living room and sat on the floor against the door to keep him out, the accused left the property and she rang a friend to come over. Chamberlain returned later when police arrived and arrested him.

Chamberlain, who had no previous convictions, later told police: ‘I didn’t think it was that serious. All I did was push her.’ But admitted he might have lost his temper.
