-

The annual Blythswood Appeal for filled shoeboxes in Lochalsh was again a success with 74 boxes sent to Romania in December.

The annual bonfire and fireworks display on November 5 attracted a large crowd. The food was organised by Sue Atkinson and raised £740 and the bucket collection took in £1,169.17.

At Hogmanay, the bonfire and fireworks were held as usual and the bucket collection raised £235.

Deaths in Lochalsh during January included Helen Anderson and Alec Walker, both of Kyle. Sympathy is expressed to sorrowing relatives.

Plockton villagers were sorry to hear of the death of M C Beaton, the author of the Hamish MacBeth series.

The community of Glenelg and Arnisdale raised £794.50 for the Earl Haig Poppy Fund.

The door-to-door collection was helped by two quiz nights and a pool night in the Glenelg Inn, as well as surplus from a cancer fundraiser held in memory of Doug Watkins, who was in the armed forces for many years.

So the total for Lochalsh, Glenshiel, Glenelg and South Skye (Broadford) was £5,046.50.

The annual meeting of the Plockton and District Horticultural Society was held in Plockton Hall on January 23. Seventeen members attended and treasurer Sheila Harvey submitted a satisfactory report with a profit of £805.73 over the year.

All the office bearers were re-elected. Matt Wakeford stood down from the committee as he had left the district.
