Putting the spotlight on Oban FM

-

The Oban Times has teamed up with Oban FM (103.3) to bring our readers a monthly question and answer profile on our community radio DJs. In the spotlight this week is one of the station’s longest serving presenters, Campbell Cameron, who takes the regular Wednesday Drive-time slot from 5pm to 7pm. Well worth a listen.

How long have you been at Oban FM? Since 1992 – 28 years continuously this year.

What is your ‘daytime’ job? I am a business consultant – specialising in broadband and business mentoring and coaching.

What is your earliest memory? Day one at school in Benderloch’s Lochnell Primary School with Mrs MacArthur – what a teacher!

Which living person do you most admire, and why? Greta Thunberg takes a bit of beating – she will wake us up on climate change! David Attenborough is fairly close behind – what an ambassador for the planet. Then it’s Nicola the First Minister – she is an inspiration in the pursuit of normality for a country. Independence. Am I allowed three?

What was the first record/ download you bought? Download? A 7” single it was! Leapy Lee and Little Arrows – 1967. It was the first time I remember recognising a story in a song! Then I bought a cassette tape of Allan Freeman’s First Lesson – a compilation of all the late ‘60s blockbusters.

What are your all-time

top five tunes? Imagine – John Lennon; Bohemian Rhapsody – Queen; The River – Bruce Springsteen; Whole of the Moon – The Waterboys; Miracle of Being (Youth Mix) – Capercaillie, the first ever top 40 single in Gaelic. They’re the rock ones – then there are the folkie ones, the country ones, and the chart ones ....

What is your most treasured possession?

After good health, I just love my house in the village of Benderloch which I share with Joy.

What would your super power be? Teleporting or flying.

Who would you invite to your dream dinner

party? Jesus, St Teresa of India, President John F Kennedy, Bob Hope and actor David Niven.

From those alive? Mike Scott of the Waterboys, First Minister Nicola Sturgeon, Billy Connolly, Greta Thunberg and David Attenborough. Great variety !

If you could go back in time, where would you

go? I would love to travel back to Oban about 1880 with a few pounds in my pooch. It would be grand to witness the coming of the railway – all the ships too – to sail into Oban Bay aboard one of the steamers arriving out of Clydeside Glasgow to serve the west and the islands. Epic! And a dram of the ‘Oban’ at the Oban Inn too.

What single thing would improve the quality of your life? Now we have superfast broadband in Benderloch, all we need now is great spring and summer sunshine.

What is the most important lesson life has taught you? When it all comes down to it – it is not about things material – it’s about friends. Helping others and making someone smile is the biggest delight in my life.
