VICTORY HALL SPORTS MONTH
Benderloch’s Victory Hall has been used for a multitude of community purposes over the last century.
To celebrate its centenary year, the hall committee has organised a series of themed months to showcase each genre of these many events and March is Sports Month.
This Saturday, March 7, Lachie Strathern and his team will be rolling out the green carpet and throwing open the doors to anyone who would like to try carpet bowls.
A similar concept to curling, the idea of the game is to roll a bowl up a felt covered ‘alley’ and try to get it nearest to the centre of the rings chalked on to the other end.
The fun will start from 3pm onwards with all ages and abilities welcome.
On Saturday March 28, from 1pm-4pm, past, present and new players are invited to go along and try badminton.
Benderloch Badminton Club has been running since the 1930s when the old section of the hall was used, with low beams providing an additional challenge.
The club moved to the new hall in 1997. One of the key design features of the new hall was a high ceiling to accommodate badminton.
Badminton has been ever-present in the village since, with the Wednesday night youth club continuing to prove popular.
Run by Alasdair Calder, the club boasts two Argyll and Bute Council Sports Awards; Service to Sport in 2016 and Youth Coach of the Year in 2017.
The club has also benefited from donations of a net, rackets and shuttlecocks from Argyll and Bute Council and thanks go to the authority for its generosity.
Both events are free, but donations to the Victory Hall fund are welcome.
