Pupils win £3,000 for project
Now in its fourth year, the Youth and Philanthropy Initiative (YPI) run by Ardnamurchan High School asked students to present on local social issues to win £3,000 for a chosen charity addressing that issue.
In small groups, S3 students prepared and made a presentation to a panel of judges and representatives from charities.
This year, the programme ran as an inter-disciplinary project between RME and English; RME focusing on the social issues and English the content and presentation skills. The eight charities represented were: Lochaber Hope, RNLI, Strontian Men’s Shed, West Lochaber Hospital Transport Project, Lochaber Women’s Aid, Ewen’s Room, Lochaber Foodbank and Shopmobility Lochaber. The panel took almost an hour to deliberate and decided on the group championing West Lochaber Hospital Transport Project as the winners.
Isabella Sutherland, Alex MacKinnon and Emma MacLachlan delivered an interactive, informative and thought-provoking presentation which won the much-needed £3,000 for the charity to the delight of the representative. An Ardnamurchan High spokesperson said: ‘Despite the challenges of the weather, which resulted in some absence and some technical problems on the morning of the event, the pupils were magnificent and rose to the occasion. All the hard work and nerves were worth it as every group gave clear, wellthought-out and emotional presentations which were all worthy of winning.
‘It was an excellent event with a deserving winning group and awareness has been raised for all the charities which do such amazing work. A huge well done to all.’
