Boxer gets his gloves on welcome sponsorship
Cameron Whyte of Lochaber Phoenix Boxing got his gloves around a £500 donation from Billy Lauder of Billy's Window Cleaning Services recently to help fund his participation in coaching events across Scotland.
Every boxer in the club gets the chance to travel to organised training sessions, visit other clubs and participate in national competitions, with all expenses met by the club so that noone is disadvantaged due to a lack of finance. While members also actively participate in fund-raising events, donations like Billy’s are welcome to ensure these trips can continue. Coach
Vince Lopez said: ‘We have quite a large squad of males and females, aged from nine years to adults, of tremendous talent and ability. While we all work very hard in our home gym, a great way to hone and develop them further is build experience with other boxers.’
‘Last Sunday, a group of around 15 of us travelled to Blantyre for training and sparring with Priestfield gym and O’Neills Boxing Club,’ said coach Lopez.
‘Everyone really enjoyed it and learned a lot but it cost quite a bit. Everyone in the club is a volunteer so we really appreciate help with unavoidable expenses.’
Preparations are under way for the Scottish Elite Championships in the next few weeks and for the next home show in the Nevis Centre on Saturday May 16.
This showcases Lochaber talent against opponents from other areas, and helps to raise money for the club.
As an example of what can be achieved by youngsters given the right training and support, 17-year-old Cameron, from Spean Bridge, already has many titles under his belt including North of Scotland Champion, Scottish Novice Champion, Scottish Intermediate Champion, six times Scottish Open Champion, GB Champion and European Silver Medallist.
