What a drama!
This year's Lorn Drama festival will take place over three nights, from March 18-20, in the Corran Halls.
The festival continues to be supported by local clubs and those from further afield, with Accent players making the trip up from Campbeltown.
The festival gives amateur actors and directors the opportunity to take the audience to different places and tell a wide variety of stories, some unashamedly comic, others more serious.
It also allows creative writers to try their hand at writing for the stage and the festival is pleased to be awarding the Drama Festival Quill for the best original script, written by, or for, the clubs and in its first production. This award continues to encourage clubs and local writers to produce interesting and original work for the festival.
One original script will be performed this year. Fork in the Road is a comedy written by Seil Drama Club member John Coulson, which will be performed by the club. Another comedy in the festival will be staged by Benderloch and North Connel Drama Club, performing Rebel Alliance, by John Finnemore. This follows the success of English for Pony lovers and Hot Desk last year. Finnemore is well known for comedy writing for The Now Show and the award-winning series Cabin Pressure.
Benderloch is also presenting 13a, 13b, a play set on a flight to Rome, written by another favourite writer of the club, Peter Souter, who wrote Stream, River, Sea and That's Mine, This is Yours, both of which were extremely well received at festivals in the past few years.
Taynuilt Drama Society is performing dramatic works. The play for adults is an extract from Anastasia by Marcelle Maurette, which was adapted for the BBC. The juniors are performing The Terezin Promise by Celeste Raspanti. Set in Prague in 1945, at the end of the Second World War, it tells the story of how a teenage survivor of Terezin concentration camp finds hundreds of drawings recording the lives of the children who passed through the camp. A wartime theme is also used in World War Two, performed by Lochnell Primary School. This play with music describes the experiences of children in an air raid shelter and those waiting to be evacuated to the country.
Benderloch Juniors will stage Can You Hear the Music, by David Campton, which is also a dramatic piece set in a loft where six mice discuss their dreams and life in general.
