Oban FM’s first step on Road to Rockfield
People of Oban and the Isles and much further afield are getting behind Oban FM’s dream of a new digital stateof-the-art radio studio.
Listeners from around the world tuned in and bought into the dream during a special St Patrick’s Day celebration at the station on Saturday which raised £2,000.
Convenor of the Oban FM board Campbell Cameron praised the efforts of all the presenters who were there and there in spirit.
‘What a team. It is the first important step in a demonstration of community support for voluntary radio in Oban,’ he said.
‘We asked folk to donate and join us by taking out membership of the station, which was formed in 1992.
‘The calls and messages of support came in all day. It was brilliant.
‘Everyone who entered went into an on-going draw. When we tipped the £2,000 mark there were a few tears in the studio.’
The station plans continued fun-raising – no ‘d’ just fun – throughout the year to be ready for the Rockfield Centre’s ‘soft’ opening planned for the autumn. Details at www.obanfm.scot
The plan is for a central meeting room flanked by two digital studios offering maximum flexibility for recording and broadcasts. The meeting room will be useful for bigger, round table discussions on and off air. Oban FM is licensed to serve North Argyll until 2028.
‘It’s a challenge and without the renowned support of the Oban business community and the wider listenership we could not have undertaken and begun this plan with such determination,’ said station manager Laura Johnston.
