Flower show blooms online
People on Mull, Ulva and Iona still have time to make sure entries grow for an online flower show, writes Kathie Griffiths.
Disappointed organisers of Tobermory Horticultural Society’s Spring Show had to cancel the real thing because of coronavirus but came up with a cyber challenge instead.
The plan is for grown-ups and children to send in photographs of their exhibits to the society’s Facebook page where they will be displayed in an online gallery. There are no entry fees and the theme is arty crafty gardens.
The show was scheduled for Saturday April 18 at the Aros Hall.
For the first time, there is a category for painted rocks. Tobermory Rocks is a hideand-seek craze that started three years ago in the harbour town with people painting rocks and leaving them for people to find then hide again. The rocks from Mull have made it all over the world. ‘The online show is just for fun and to help people show off what they’ve come up with. There won’t be any proper judging but we might be able to award the odd well done sticker,’ said the society’s vice president Margaret Macgregor.
Mrs Macgregor added: ‘Our Facebook page is usually just for notices but people are definitely interested in the online show and are looking at it. We’re just asking people to enter for fun, make up their flower arrangements, paint their rocks and send us a photograph so we can put it in a gallery and bring a bit of cheer.
‘People don’t have to worry about perfection. It’s taking part that counts.’
For the time being, the Summer Flower Show is still in the diary for this August.
When sending in photographs, people must write the section they are entering. Entries have to be in for April 18. If anyone struggles to get their entry online, they can email it to Moray Honeyman at clanhoneyman@aol.com
