New role will be child’s play for Rockfield’s new heritage officer

-

Playtime has a whole new meaning for Easdale Primary School teacher Elisabeth Stevenson, writes Fiona Scott.

Originally from Seattle, USA, Elisabeth moved to Oban in 2007 when she married husband Ian Stevenson, and last week she was introduced as the Rockfield Centre’s new heritage officer.

Elisabeth’s main task will be to develop the new learning space/play area within the new building, a job which she just can’t wait to get started on.

‘Two years ago I began the Art Explorers, with the support of the Rockfield Centre, to provide holiday art camps and an after-school club for children in P2-P7,’ she explained.

‘I wanted children to have more opportunities to experience the process of art because

I felt we just didn’t have enough time in school and I could see how much the children loved it.

‘It has been a wonderful success with many children taking part.’

The space itself is situated on the ground floor and the play area will be designed around the history of Oban with exhibits and programs to stimulate informal learning through play.

‘I am very excited about this new position and the chance to use my experience in education to develop an interactive play and learning space within the Rockfield Centre,’ added Elisabeth.

‘Even though I am very sad to leave Easdale school, I look forward to involving the children and getting their feedback with ideas for the building of the interactive play space.’

In addition to developing the play space, Elisabeth will be working closely with the heritage group to promote the history of the old school and the Oban area.
