An online flower show has helped raised hundreds of pounds to help vulnerable people cope with COVID-19 on Mull.
Instead of displaying blooms and exhibits at Aros Hall on Saturday as originally planned for Tobermory Horticultural Society’s Spring Show, people were invited to send in photographs instead.
From cut spring flowers to flowering bulbs and, for the first time, painted stones in adult and children’s classes – the people of Mull and Iona put on a good virtual show, with 60 entries in all.
Mary Macgregor and other organisers from the show produced a Facebook gallery of entries and said people’s bright and beautiful efforts were ‘all fantastic’ and reflected lots of hard work and talent.
‘We have not awarded trophies or prizes this year. Instead Tobermory Horticultural Society will make a donation of £200 to a charity helping the vulnerable cope with COVID-19,’ said Mary.
And she added: ‘We will look forward to seeing more entries for our so Summer Flower Show in August. We hope the online show will have encouraged people.’
Elsewhere Ross of Mull and Iona Organic Gardeners(ROMIOG) are planning schemes that will encourage budding and seasoned gardeners to grow more of their own fruit and vegetables so that they can share harvests with all that might need it.
Gardeners are being asked to sow a few extra seeds, plant extra plants and take them to the Plant Exchange that ROMIOG is holding on May 20 in Fionnphort car park. Plants should be dropped off between 10 and noon (labelled please) and then anyone who wants items can go by between 12 and 3 to pick up. Social distancing rules will apply and the group will organise pick up and delivery for anyone who would prefer not to attend.
For those thinking that it would be nice to garden but practicalities or just getting started pose issues, ROMIOG has the perfect answer. Pre -planted planters. Just water and keep the slugs off. Thanks to Jimmy from Fidden Farm there is a stack of the plastic red sheep supplement boxes which make perfect planters. The Erraid Community has offered to fill them with soil and plant them up with salad seedlings or herbs. All you have to do is place your order for either salad or herbs and they will be ready for collection or delivery on May 20. Please send orders by email to to jgibson221@gmail.com. Happening: ‘We have a mission, should you chose to accept it.
‘We need happy, summer displays in our local shops to brighten up our days. We are asking children to create an item or a design that can be used in the windows. A 3D item that can be place in the window or a design that can be cut out and stuck to the window. Let’s fill the window displays with colours and things to make us smile.
‘You have until the end of the month and if parents let me, Donna Bannatyne, know when your item is ready I will arrange collection. Happy crafting.’
