Lego club builds success online
Even lockdown can not block Oban’s popular Master Builders Lego Club.
The hands-on club that normally meets fortnightly at the Rockfield Centre has now gone online.
Since the stay at home rules kicked in because of coronavirus, the club has now had six online meets and is building on its success, says Fee Shaw who started the club and is also arts and culture co-ordinator for The Rockfield Centre.
She said: ‘We meet on the Master Builders Lego and Creative Construction facebook group page every Saturday morning, 10-11am.
‘At this time I chat to folk with a live video at the start. However, the video stays up afterwards so people are welcome to check in any other time during the week and add photos of their builds as and when they like.’
She added: ‘It is very relaxed but that one hour on Saturday morning is a bustle of activity and kids chatting about each others’ builds via their parents typing up comments on photos. It is really encouraging to see as the club is staying connected even from our own homes.’
Each week the young builders are set two challenges and they pick from either one or, for those speedy builders, they can try both. An additional challenge that only appears at the online meetings is a five minute mini build. At 10.45am, Fee posts an unknown challenge for every one to complete against the clock.
‘Even the adults have even been getting stuck in with this one,’ she said.
Fee hopes the online club meets and activities give the children and adults a fun focus point and something familiar to return to each week.
‘As with the physical meets at The Rockfield Centre, I also imagine it is a great chance for the adults to also take a break from the stressful times we are all facing and to get back to the simple joy of using Lego to flex your imagination and building skills,’ she said.
