Livestock marts remain open

The latest guidance on how livestock marts can continue to operate during the coronaviru­s (COVID-19) pandemic has been published.

Developed by the Institute of Auctioneer­s and Appraisers in Scotland (IAAS) and the Scottish Government, the guidance sets out ways in which vulnerable people, farmers delivering livestock, hauliers and buyers can safely attend and run livestock auctions.

Rural Economy Secretary Fergus Ewing said: ‘Livestock markets are a vital link in the food chain, and we know how important their continued operation is to the livelihood­s of farmers and breeders at this challengin­g time.

‘At all times we have been led by the science and the latest guidance sets out best practice for the livestock trade to continue to operate in a safe manner, by observing physical distancing and protecting vulnerable community.

‘Crucially, it aligns with the core aspects of the Scottish Government’s guidance for people in the businesses on social distancing and will help livestock markets play their part in preventing the spread of the virus, protect our NHS and save lives.

Livestock marts are a vital link in the food chain.

‘As well as helping to ensure the continued supply of food for people and communitie­s and provide an important revenue stream for livestock farmers and breeders, keeping auction marts open will support hauliers and other businesses involved in the agricultur­al supply chain. That will help to protect livelihood­s in the rural economy, while at all times adhering to social distancing rules.’

Neil Wilson, IAAS Executive Director, said: ‘IAAS members have been working diligently to ensure the implementa­tion of these guidelines to protect human health while their important part food chain.

‘The addition of breeding sales to the schedule now means that we can also ensure the continuity of the food chain in the longer term.

‘We would also like to thank the Scottish Government for their work to support the continued operations of our markets as well as our wider customer base, both sellers and buyers, and hauliers, who have really worked hard alongside us to make sure human health protection is at the centre of everything we do.’ playing in the
