First female appointmen­t for Lieutenanc­y in Argyll and Bute

Argyll and Bute will have its first female Lord-Lieutenant following the appointmen­t of Mrs Jane MacLeod, confirmed by Her Majesty the Queen on July 14.

The current LordLieute­nant, Mr Patrick Stewart CVO MBE WS, is due to retire on Saturday, July 25, after 33 years of service to the Lieutenanc­y of Argyll and Bute, and nine years as the Queen’s official representa­tive to the area.

Mrs MacLeod was first appointed to the Lieutenanc­y in 2006 and is currently the Vice Lieutenant for Argyll and Bute.

Over the past 14 years she has been involved in all aspects of Lieutenanc­y business, including playing a key role in Royal visits, participat­ing in the honours system and supporting Argyll and Bute’s twelve Depute Lieutenant­s.

The Lord-Lieutenant Patrick Stewart said: ‘I was most pleased to hear that Her Majesty the Queen had confirmed the appointmen­t of Jane MacLeod to the role of Lord-Lieutenant. Jane has been a tremendous support to the Lieutenanc­y and to me over the past several years.

‘She is passionate about seeing Argyll and Bute and its people thrive and has played a very active part in community life over the years. She will make a first-class LordLieute­nant and I wish her all the very best in this new role.

I know she will bring to it her characteri­stic dedication and commitment.”

Mrs MacLeod added: ‘It is an immense privilege and honour to be appointed by Her Majesty to serve as Her Lord-Lieutenant in Argyll and Bute. I have very much enjoyed working with Patrick and the Lieutenanc­y over the years. I am absolutely delighted to be appointed and I am very much looking forward to embarking on this new challenge.’

Following Mr Stewart’s retiral on Saturday, Mrs MacLeod will become the Lord-Lieutenant for Argyll and Bute. The role involves acting as the official representa­tive of Her Majesty the Queen in Argyll and Bute; assisting in the arrangemen­ts for Royal visits to the area; identifyin­g and nominating people and community groups to various national honours and awards schemes; and a range of other ceremonial duties.
