Can you help track down land owner?

- by Kathie Griffiths kgriffiths@obantimes.co.uk

A search is on to find the owner of a piece of land used as a shortcut to McCaig’s Tower.

Gary Gemmell says he is just one of many people who uses the mud path that cuts up from the back of Oban’s Atlantis Leisure Centre, near the tennis courts, towards the iconic landmark that looms above the town.

Mr Gemmell, who lives in Lonan Drive but regularly uses the makeshift path when out walking, wants to give the muddy route a makeover so it can become a safer, more official footpath.

At the top of the path is a short stretch of steep concrete path that also needs to be made safer.

But first Gary has to find out who owns the land and so far that has not been easy. In a bid to track the owner, he has turned to The Oban Times to help him with his search.

The council has already confirmed the land does not belong to it, he says.

‘Lots of people use it – children to old people – it’s just a mud path at the moment and can be dangerous. When it rains the water just pours down it. It’s become overgrown with trees and bushes that need clearing.

‘If we could make it a proper path it would be good to put up some railings and maybe plant it up either side with flowers, but to do all that we need to find out who owns it. I’m hoping someone will read this and get in touch so we can make a start,’ said Mr Gemmell.

Mr Gemmell has also contacted ward councillor Roddy McCuish for support.

Councillor McCuish said: ‘I’m really impressed with Gary’s enthusiasm. Anything I can do to help, I will. I’m sure the community will step up too.’

Anyone with information on who owns the land or anyone interested in helping to work on the path, can get in touch with Mr Gemmell on 07496 610869.
