Students focus on more film success

-

Ardnamurchan High School pupils have once again been nominated for film-making awards.

Last year, the Gàidhlig medium film ‘Reòite!’ made by the school’s first and second year pupils won FilmG’s International Representative Award and would have gone forward to represent Scotland in the International Film Awards in Venice had it not been for the coronavirus pandemic.

The school’s senior learners class won the Gaelic Award for Learners for their film An Cuach, na h-Iuchraichean agus an Dròn.

This year, the school’s short film ‘Sherlock ann an Alba!’ by Parker Dawes and Caraidean is nominated for Best Young Filmmaker, FilmG Gaelic Award, Best Production and Best Film - FilmG youth 2021 with this year’s online final

Ardnamurchan High School won Film Award for Gaelic Learners last year and hope to be successful again when the winners are announced this month.

ceremony due to take place in February.

As a result of Covid restrictions, the International Film Awards in 2020 were cancelled and the school trip to Venice could not take place last summer.

However, the school received £1,200 which they have used to buy an iMac Pro laptop to strengthen the Gaelic department’s already impressive skills in film-making and editing, which has become an integral part of the Gaelic curriculum at Ardnamurchan High School.

Gaelic teachers Mr MacInnes and Mr O’ Rua said: ‘We are very proud of the pupils who took part in the FilmG competition again this year.

‘It’s a great opportunity to learn about filming and editing skills as well as using drama and scriptwriting skills. It was also great to see the pupils who did so well last year put their skills to use independently and we hope ‘Sherlock ann an Alba will succeed in the awards.

‘We are grateful to FilmG for coming to Ardnamurchan High School every year to work with pupils and pass on their film-making skills which point to a possible career choice using Gaelic.

‘It gives pupils a fantastic chance to use their language skills in a creative environment which enhances their language experience.’

Pupil Parker Dawes who was involved in last year’s S1/ S2 winning entry as well as directing this year’s successful entry ‘Sherlock ann an Alba!’ told the Lochaber Times: ‘We were inspired to make this film after watching an episode of the BBC Sherlock series in our English class.

‘We became totally hooked on producing our own original story.

‘It was certainly a challenge to fit all this into a five-minute film but we had such a fun time making this and we are all very proud of what we have produced.’
