Winds of change at Claggan Park

-

High winds earlier this month caused further damage to the beleaguered Fort William Football Club ground at Claggan Park.

As well as down trees at Achintee Road, the blustery conditions blew off part of the roof of the already precarious old stand.

Club spokesperson Colin (Woody) Wood told the Lochaber Times: ‘Thankfully the wind damage was limited to some conifer trees and the roof of the old stand, which has been in a state of disrepair for some time.

‘The Highland Council quickly closed the road until the weather eased. It is hoped this prompts a conversation about the demolition or refurbishment of the stand.’

Floodlights were also badly buffeted by the wind and the club is getting them safety tested.

The damage came just weeks after a spate of vandalism at the Claggan Park venue which saw the destruction of seats and recently laid turf.

Football Club fan William Corbett has raised £2,800 towards installing CCTV at the venue.

In other news, the club has made new signings, who will be announced in due course, while former chairman Peter Murphy has returned to the town to start up an estate agent. The club is remaining tight-lipped as to whether or not he will be coming back on board. ‘We wish him all the best with his new venture,’ said Woody.

Elsewhere, police are appealing for information in relation to vandalism at Kilmallie Shinty Club in Caol. It occurred sometime between noon on Friday January 29 and 9am on Saturday January 30. Anyone with any information should contact 101.
