Fledgling charity aims to inspire schoolchildren

-

Every primary school in Lochaber will be supplied with a birdbox from a new charity launched earlier this month.

The Highlands and Islands Environmental Foundation (HIEF) is partnering with community groups to develop nature-based solutions to environmental challenges on their doorsteps.

The Highland Primary School Birdbox Project will supply the 175 primary schools across the highland area with ten birdboxes each over four years. Built from sustainable and recycled materials, the birdboxes will be accompanied by teaching resources and website. The project aims to inspire local school children to learn about the natural world on their doorstep, while providing nesting opportunities for threatened native birds.

Tom Rawson, project lead for the Highland Project, said: ‘With the help of HIEF, I hope to inspire children to become the guardians of our nation’s precious wildlife.’

Hugh Raven, co-founder of HIEF, said: ‘Our research through the Environmental Funders Network into Scotland’s green funding clearly shows the case for more vital, regional investment in the wildlife

aand climate challenge in the Highlands and Islands. HIEF funding provides a unique opportunity for individuals and community groups to do something about the challenge facing them. Often, a little investment can make a big difference and we hope HIEF will provide an important incentive for local people to tackle challenges on their doorsteps.’

Created in partnership with the Conservation Collective, HIEF welcomes donations from individuals and businesses and encourages local groups to apply for grants. To find out more visit www. hief.scot.
