Do your bit to spring clean Oban

-

Keep Oban Beautiful is pressing ahead with informal plans for this year’s Big Spring Clean.

While Covid restrictions mean an organised event like previous years cannot go ahead, people can still take up the challenge to pick up litter on their own patch, either by themselves, with family or their bubble members, says Maurice Wilkins of Keep Oban Beautiful.

The 2021 Big Spring Clean would have been Oban’s fourth such event if last year’s tidy up had not been called off by the pandemic.

‘We’re keen to keep the initiative ticking over and hope people will make the effort on their own or as Covid regulations allow them so they can still join in,’ said Maurice.

‘Traditionally we’ve done it on the last weekend of March, but it can be done any time.’

Informal

A number of litter picks to borrow and bags can be provided if people want to contact Keep Oban Beautiful via its Facebook page but it is ‘very much an informal’ tidy this year, added Maurice.

In 2019, the event had about 100 people joining in, collecting 300 bags of rubbish from around the town.

The hydro area at the top of town and Jacob’s Ladder are hot spots for litter louts in the town centre.

‘We need more bins in the town but we also need people to be educated not to drop litter in the first place. If there isn’t a bin, take it home,’ said Maurice.

Photos of people’s Big Spring Clean actions can be sent to Keep Oban Beautiful's Facebook and to The Oban Times.
