Lochaber environmental activist Holly appeals for climate drawings

Student climate activists from Fridays for Future Scotland, including Lochaber’s Holly Gillibrand, are creating a map of the Highlands to demonstrate the effects of climate change on communities.

Since early 2019, the students have been planning the school strikes for climate all over the Highlands and want to unveil the map on Friday, March 19, the date of the next global strike.

Across the world, pupils will be striking online due to the ongoing pandemic, but this has not stopped the Highlands branch demanding climate action.

Ms Gillibrand, 15, from Fort William and a Lochaber High School pupil, said: ‘We want to open this activity up to anyone at all in the Highlands whatever your age.

‘All we ask is that you send in a drawing of how your area will be affected by climate change by emailing highlands@fffscot.org and we will add your design to our map.’

May Armstrong, 17, from Lairg, added: ‘The pandemic has made us think outside of the box in what we can do to show the government and local council that we need to take action on climate change now.

‘We hope this map will bring to light the effects of climate change such as the rising seas in the Highlands, since it has such a large coastline.’

Fridays for Future Scotland is a group of young people who have been organising school strikes to protest climate inaction since January 2019.

It is part of a global movement called Fridays for Future which was started in Sweden by Greta Thunberg.
