Keep Ganavan Green

-

Friends of Ganavan (FoG) is committed to protecting the green spaces at Ganavan from more housing development.

The area under threat in the latest local development plan is known as Potential Development Area (PDA) P4023 and is the backdrop to the Ganavan beaches.

We believe the building of new houses in this wild, beautiful and scenic area would be detrimental on all fronts.

FoG has been in contact with the local development planning department, key council officials, Argyll and Bute councillors and Oban Community Council. Whilst the consultation process is over for the local plan (LDP2), we continue to lobby on all fronts such is the importance of this area not just to residents but to the wider population of Argyll and Bute.

We are trying to persuade ALL councillors in Argyll and Bute to remove this Ganavan area from the local plan at the full council meeting in June, before it goes for examination to the Scottish government.

Our community survey has returned thousands of comments.

Here is one such plea to Keep Ganavan Green.

‘Born and bred in this town, Ganavan and the surrounding areas have always been part of my life, from the enjoyment as a child to now taking and watching the enjoyment of my own children playing there. It’s an area I use now to keep my soul alive and for good mental health. I would feel gutted if it was not freely available, especially during this last year.

‘It’s already a great sadness that we have lost so much at Ganavan once abuzz with holiday makers, play areas, donkey rides, trampoline area, pavilion... I could go on. Why has it been allowed over the years to become what it has? People complain of children playing on bikes and scooters in the town, yet they are provided with nowhere as an alternative to play.

‘How can it be justified that this, one of the last places they can go and be children together, playing, laughing, feeling free as a child, should or could also be taken from them? Shame on everyone involved in letting this go ahead.’
