Lighthouse workshop shines on British Science Week
Here’s one Abigail Konopka made earlier.
The four-year-old was one of 35 people taking part in a recent online workshop about lighthouses and how to make their own working model at home.
The workshop, hosted by The Rockfield Centre (TRC), was part of British Science Week.
Led by Elisabeth Stevenson, TRC’s heritage officer, the participants heard there are more than 200 lighthouses built around the coast of Scotland.
Those taking part also learned about some of the science, technology and history of the fascinating structures. Elisabeth said: ‘The event went well considering it was the first time being involved with British Science Week and having to do it online. Hopefully, we will be able to offer ‘in person’ events similar to this in the future.’
She thanked expert volunteers Alan Cran, principal electrical engineer with Northern Lighthouse Board, and Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) ambassador Kalina Dimitrova.
Elisabeth added: ‘Alan and Kalina shared excellent information and will both be assisting with future events.
‘I really enjoyed seeing the finished lighthouse models shared at the end of the session by participating families. I am hoping to create a STEM club for youngsters very soon.’
