Green Shack plaudits
The world-famous seafood hut on Oban’s Railway Pier has been mentioned at the Scottish Parliament after topping a list of the best UK places to eat seafood
Two small businesses based in Oban and Tobermory have been recognised in the Scottish Parliament, following their inclusion in a UK-wide list of the best places to eat seafood, writes Fiona Scott.
Oban Seafood Hut (The Green Shack) and Café Fish, which is based in Tobermory, were included among seven Scottish businesses in the Observer newspaper’s ‘22 best places to eat seafood around the UK coast’. Both businesses were commended in the article by renowned chef-owner of the Inver restaurant near Strachur, Pam Brunton.

Café Fish, which is based in Tobermory and the Oban Seafood Hut (The Green Shack), were included among a total of seven Scottish businesses in the Observer newspapers ‘22 best places to eat seafood around the UK coast’.
Both businesses were commended in the article by renowned chef-owner of the Inver restaurant near Strachur, Pam Brunton.
News of the inclusion in the Observer’s list, prompted MSP Donald Cameron to acknowledge the achievement in the Scottish Parliament by means of a written motion.
‘I am extremely pleased that two businesses from Argyll have been recognised at a UK-wide level in this way,’ he said.
‘This positive publicity can only help these local businesses and others across Argyll.
‘Few things are better than freshly caught and locally prepared seafood, and I look forward to visiting both businesses over the summer to try out their offering.
‘As we continue our recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic, it is more vital than ever that we support our local businesses as well as encouraging tourists to spend money locally.’
Tony Monaghan, manager of The Green Shack which sits beside the CalMac ferry terminal, had not seen either the Observer article or the Scottish Parliament motion but had certainly heard about them from his customers this week.
‘Everyone has been asking us about it when they come to the shack,’ he said.
‘It’s great to have some good news after the last year and we are thrilled that people think so highly of us. We have missed our overseas visitors this year but we have had lots of new people coming from all over Britain so can’t complain.
‘It’s just fantastic to be open again and welcoming all customers wherever they come from.’
