Scouts and Cubs mark achievements

- by Kathie Griffiths kgriffiths@obantimes.co.uk

Seven new recruits went to great heights to join Ardchattan’s scouts at the top of Glen Creran.

The youngsters made it to the summit of Creach Bheinn to officially become part of the 37th Argyll (Ardchattan) Scouts’ troop in an investment ceremony 810m up.

Lofty accolades have also been awarded in the scouting group to its cub pack sixers Orion, Felix, Sam and Holly who have been presented the Chief Scout’s Silver Award.

After more than two years’ hard work, the dedicated cubs received their awards – the highest a cub can get – at Tralee beach having achieved all seven challenge badges during their pack time before moving up to scouts after the summer.

Their badges ranged from teamwork and adventures to leadership and to personal challenges they chose themselves from cycling to school to kayaking rapids on the River Awe and camping at midwinter to cooking three course meals for their families.

The sixer cubs’ achievements are testament to the hard work of the cub pack’s previous leaders especially Adrian Beard, Andy and Moira Newiss and Chris MacPherson.

‘Although some have now stepped into other roles in the scouting group, they laid the groundwork for these cubs to achieve this highest award,’ said acting cub leader Susannah Hughes.

It could be more than 25 years since the Ardchattan cubs were last awarded the honour.

‘The cub pack would also like to take this opportunity to thank Adrian who has recently stepped down as Group Scout Leader for 37th Argyll; his enormous enthusiasm and support to all the children and families of our scouting group is hugely appreciated,’ she added.

All sections of 37th Argyll (Ardchattan) Beavers, Cubs and Scouts are full for now but there is a waiting list if other families from the area surrounding Oban are interested.

Mrs Hughes will be moving on soon to help run the Ardchattan scouts so the cub pack is urgently looking for a new leader.
