Kick-starting the rugby season in style

-

Excitement is at fever pitch this week as Oban Lorne Rugby Football Club (RFC) gets ready to stage a feast of rugby for all ages.

The club will kick-start its 21/22 season on Saturday August 7 with an extravaganza at its Glencruitten ground, with the help of funding from Scottish Rugby.

‘The idea is to re-open the clubhouse and get the community involved again,' said Oban Lorne RFC secretary Murray Hamilton. ‘We are hoping to have rugby for everyone, music and food. And the bar will be open.'

Garnock RFC, Lochaber RFC and Mull RFC are joining the party and will play the senior men's team, while the women's team will have training and an interclub game including players from across Argyll.

The fun will kick-off with mini rugby at 11am before Under 14/15 Oban High School boys and girls play one of their Bulls v Sharks matches. A re-match for the Jolomo Cup between North and South Argyll U16s is also in the pipeline.

‘We are calling on all players young, old and anywhere in between to come along and support their local rugby club,' added Murray. ‘We will also have a veterans game on the day so players from all over Argyll are welcome to dust off the boots and look out the Deep Heat!'

The day will end with the showing of the British and Irish Lions test match against South Africa in the clubhouse at 5pm.

Club officials will be available throughout the day to help with player registration for the SRU SCRUMS system and players, families and supporters can pay their memberships on the day. All covid guidelines will be followed and the club ask that everyone attending uses the QR codes displayed to check in when they arrive and check out when they leave.

The timeline for the day will be finalised nearer the time and advertised on Oban Lorne RFC's social media channels.

September sees the re-start of league competitions with the men's team playing host to Clydebank on September 4 in a West Region Division Two clash, while the ladies begin their West Region Division One campaign with a home game against Greenock on September 19.
