Boxing Day comes early for Lochaber fighters
‘Boxing Day’ is early this year, with the gift of an invite to visit Lochaber Phoenix Boxing Club in Corpach.
Friday August 27 has been declared International Boxing Day to mark the first World Boxing Championships organised by umbrella body AIBA (International Boxing Association) in Cuba in
August 1974. The association has had a standardised set of rules for amateur boxing for almost 80 years and has signed up a membership of more than 200 national regulatory organisations.
Marking the occasion, the Lochaber club is opening its doors to demonstrate its fitness and boxing activities which cover all ages from nine years upwards.
Often described as ‘the loneliest sport’, it takes a lot of hard work, determination and confidence before stepping into the ring, which is the choice of each individual.
Since its formation, Lochaber Phoenix has proven itself as a real force in the sport, taking many championship titles at a number of age and weight levels since the early days and providing members to the Scotland squad to take part in international bouts.
As with many other sports, Covid has curtailed activities, especially the club home shows, which not only provided the chance to demonstrate their abilities against opponents from across the country to a local audience, but also as the main fund raisers to support the charity. Happily a home show is scheduled for November 6 with tickets on sale soon.
Tomorrow (Friday), demonstrations will take place between 6pm and 7pm covering the various ways in which training is conducted under the expert eyes of qualified coaches.
Covid restrictions will be in operation and masks will be required indoors, but please come along and support the club which is based on the Annat Point Industrial Estate in Corpach. More details are available on the club’s Facebook page.
