Oban Rotary’s golf Am Am event gets back on course

-

The Rotary Club of Oban’s popular Am Am event was back on course at the weekend - raising an incredible £10,000 for charities in the area.

The club had to cancel the event in 2020 and again in June this year as a result of the Coivd-19 pandemic, but it was back to business last Sunday at Glencruitten Golf Club.

And although the number of teams was down on previous years, largely because of Covid, it was generally agreed by everyone involved it was yet another great day of enjoyment and fundraising.

The Am Am is Oban Rotary’s principal fundraiser in support of local good causes. Funds are generated via 100 plus sponsors, the main one being The Oban Times.

Competing teams come from as far afield as Glasgow and Dunblane. There is also a raffle and auction on the day with all items on offer being donated. This year’s auction included a top signed by Oban professional golfer Robert MacIntyre.

It is estimated this year’s event will raise around £10,000 which is outstanding given the unusual and strange times currently being experienced.

The three principal prizes on offer, which are the two best scores on a stableford basis from a four man team, were won by ‘3 Lefts + 1’, The Oban Times Cup; Oban Camanachd ‘A’, The PDK Shellfish Cup, with ‘Neilly 3 + 3’ coming in third, The George Millar Trophy. The winner of the separate Yellow Ball competition, lowest score, was Oban Memorials and best visiting team was Dalmally 3. Other prizes included the longest drive and nearest the pin at four holes.

The various prizes were presented by Oban Rotary president Kees van Rein and in bringing the day to an end, acting Rotary convener Iain MacIntyre paid tribute to the generosity of the event’s sponsors, the commitment of the players and the support the organising committee gets from the management and staff at Glencruitten Golf Club. A special thank you was given to the local Sea Cadets who acted as ball spotters.
