‘Blue wave’ climate protest planned for Oban young people

An anti-climate change organisation in Argyll and Bute is calling for residents to take part in school strikes on a day of youth engagement at COP26.

Time for Change Argyll and Bute is looking to rally behind events in Oban, Lochgilphead and Helensburgh on Friday November 5.

That is the date when younger people will be involved at the COP26 conference in Glasgow, which will see thousands of delegates from all over the world descend on the city. Events are also planned by Time for Change Argyll and Bute for the following day, Saturday November 6. The planned school strikes are expected to be peaceful. A spokesperson for the organisation said: ‘We’d love to support the School Strikes on Friday November 5, which is the day of Youth Engagement at COP26.

‘We’re in the process of organising strikes in Lochgilphead, Oban and Helensburgh on this day so that as many people as possible can take part and show solidarity for the global strikes happening in Glasgow on the same day as well as on Saturday November 6. ‘We can’t do this without your help.’ A member of Time for Change Argyll and Bute, Ellen Bird, told The Oban Times: ‘We are planning an event for the Global Day of Climate Action in Oban on November 6. On this day, people across the world will take to the streets calling for real and urgent action to be taken on climate change.

‘In Oban we will join the global mobilisation by forming a great blue wave of people along the front of town to represent rising sea-levels and highlight areas of Oban that will be impacted by flooding caused by climate change.

‘The wave will also be a celebration of all that we love about our coastal town and wish to protect.

‘The event begins at 10.30am.’
