Fort William Tyre Service support for boxing club

Lochaber Phoenix Boxing Club had a very welcome early Christmas present when Alec Cottam of Fort William Tyre Service became the club’s latest major sponsor with a substantial donation to their funds.

The donation is particularly welcome because - as with many other sporting clubs the shutdown caused by Covid really hit home financially with no income from training fees or fundraising events, while still having to meet regular bills. Due to this, finance was reaching its lowest point since the club was founded.

Alec has been a great friend of the club for some time, taking an interest in activities as well as supporting the recent home show by sponsoring a bout, advertising in the programme and making the winning bid on an auction item.

Accepting the cheque on behalf of the club, head coach Vince Lopez said: ‘We can’t thank Alec enough for his help.

‘The club is hugely popular in the community and all of our training sessions are very well attended from age nine in the junior section to as young as you feel in the seniors, both male and female. All are welcome.

‘Due to our location we have no option but to travel to other clubs and competitions right across Scotland so that our boxers can gain the experience and awards they are so keen to get and certainly deserve.

‘While we are more than happy to do this, each trip costs quite a bit of money.

‘With Covid restrictions lifting for the moment there will be more opportunity for our boxers to take part and demonstrate their abilities, including the National Championships in Motherwell over two week

It may have been cold and dark outside, but members of Lochaber Phoenix Boxing Club were happy to go along and personally thank Alec Cottam of Fort William Tyre Service for his sponsorship which will help them further develop their skills.
