Gaelic Choir ‘chord’ially invites new members

-

Taynuilt Gaelic Choir is looking for more members to tune into its silver anniversary celebrations.

The choir hopes more voices will boost its core membership which totals 18.

Weekly rehearsals are still on Zoom but the choir's vice chairman Davy Paterson and his conductor wife Audrey hope sessions in the village sports pavilion will return soon.

No previous choir experience or knowledge of Gaelic is needed. You just need to be able to ‘hold a tune’, said Davy. ‘We have a Gaelic tutor and put things up on SoundCloud so people can hear the pronunciation. That helps a lot. We probably only have two or three people who are fluent. The rest have no or just a little Gaelic, so that shouldn’t put anyone off joining us. We hope to meet back in person soon but for the meantime it’s on Zoom. We still have a wee chat and a laugh so there’s a good social side to it as well.

‘We’ll be learning new tunes for the next national Mòd in Perth in October and we’re hoping the Oban Mòd will happen in June and that the Mull Mòd will go ahead this year. We’re keeping everything crossed.

‘About half of the choir went to last year’s Mod in Inverness but it was more of a showcase, it wasn’t competitive. It was still good to be there and to take part. We all hope this year will see the return of more normality and that we might also be able to perform at ceilidhs again,’ added Davy.
