Medal winner Lewis West went for gold at the annual Dwarf Sports Association UK games in Birmingham.

The seven-year-old, who is a pupil at Dunbeg Primary School, was heading home victorious with a hoard of medals – including gold for hockey.

Lewis joined the Scottish Region team taking part in the games, which attracted more than 180 athletes and were held for the first time since Covid struck two years ago.

British former Paralympian swimmer Ellie Simmonds OBE, who is patron of the Dwarf Sports Association UK (DSAUK), was also there to congratulate Lewis on his wins.

Lewis’s mum Catriona Currie said her son was as ‘laid back as ever’ about his wins and meeting superstar Ellie.

‘He’s been having a great time and been pretty laid back as ever about winning medals and meeting Ellie. He’s done amazing. We are incredibly proud of him. I think we might have a wee shinty star of the future on our hands. Getting a gold in hockey was just fantastic,’ she said.

As well as a gold in hockey, Lewis got a silver medal for football along with silvers in the 10m and 20m sprint.

Dad Graham West, who runs Go Naked Veg Ltd in Oban, was expecting even more podium time for Lewis before the end of the three-daygames – once results were in from swimming and cycling. Lewis was able to get ready for the cycling event thanks to a bicycle loaned to him by DSAUK and funded by Heart Research UK.

The DSAUK was founded by Arthur Dean and fellow members of the Restricted Growth Association (RGA) at the 1993 annual conference, following Dean taking part in the first World Dwarf Games in Chicago, organised by the Dwarf Athletic Association of America (DAAA).
