Mull warehouse demolition approved

-

Council chiefs have given the go-ahead for the demolition of a warehouse on Mull.

A steel portal frame building to accommodate storage and a depot will replace the building at the Baliscate Industrial Estate in Tobermory, under the plans by Highland Services.

Argyll and Bute Council received only one representation, from Oban District Access Panel, welcoming proposals in the application for an accessible parking bay and a British Standards-compliant toilet.

With no statutory consultees registering any objections either, the council's planning officers awarded planning permission this week.

A planning officer said in a handling report: ‘It is proposed to demolish the existing warehouse building and storage shed within the site. The warehouse building is a single storey prefabricated building which is located at the entrance to the site.

‘These structures are of no architectural merit and are in a rundown condition, and it is considered that their removal and replacement would significantly benefit the site visually.

‘It is proposed to erect a steel portal framed building in an offset central position within the site. The proposed building will measure approximately 30 metres in length, 15 metres in width and will have a height of approximately 8.54 metres to ridge height. The floor area will be approximately 450 square metres. The floor area of the proposed building will be much greater than the floor area of the warehouse and storage shed which will be demolished.

‘The height of the proposed building will also be greater than the buildings which are proposed to be demolished being approximately 2.3 metres higher than the existing storage shed. This increase in scale is considered to be acceptable given that the site presents an opportunity for redevelopment within an established business and industry area within a designated settlement where the scale of development is not limited.'
