Corpach residents ‘badge their bins’ in effort to tackle speeding drivers
Corpach residents living along the busy A830 trunk road have now been supplied with 30mph warning stickers for their wheelie bins in an effort to remind drivers to watch their speed while passing though the area.
Kilmallie Community Council secretary, Russell Leaper, and his wife Susannah Calderan were joined by local resident Joanne Mackin and her toddler, Isabelle, to distribute the stickers to residents last week.
Mr Leaper explained: ‘As a community council one of the issues we hear most complaints about is excessive speeds on the A830. So we are particularly pleased to support this initiative from the police and the Safety Camera
Partnership. The wheelie bin stickers provide a reminder to drivers to slow down. Although the bins are only out one day a week, having signs that change has been found to be an effective way to remind drivers, alongside the permanent road traffic signage.
‘Putting the stickers on your bin is a way of showing support for slower speeds. We hope to obtain similar 20mph stickers for residents in Banavie and Camaghael.’ Community council chairman John Hitchison echoed Mr Leaper’s comments, telling the Lochaber Times: ‘One of our residents spotted 30mph repeater signs affixed to wheelie bins elsewhere in Scotland and brought the idea to the community council and we had support from the police from the outset.
‘We get complaints about speeding vehicles regularly and we do need to encourage more considerate driver behaviour, so I’d encourage everyone living in the 30mph restricted length of Corpach to use these stickers.’
Sergeant Leigh Brown, of Fort William Police Station, added: ‘We have listened to concerns from the local community regarding speeding in this area, and this is one way of reminding drivers to monitor their speed.
‘The consequences of speeding can be catastrophic and we will continue to carry out enforcement in order to change driver behaviour.’
