Toc talk
SIR: My wife and I have visited Talbot House (‘Escape from the trenches’, June issue) several times, with our friends Ron and Gail. Ron’s grandfather is buried at nearby Mont Noire Cemetery.
The name Toc H lived on when Toc H clubs were opened after the war around the UK. Each with its dimly lit lamp outside (or so I was told).
On the road from Chesterfield, Derbyshire, out to Baslow/chatsworth, about half a mile from Chesterfield centre, there remains a street called ‘Toc H Yard’. I looked in there the other day, but no trace remains of the old club, obscured by later development. John Smith, Virginia Water, Surrey.
