From your first glimpse of the Great Treasury at Petra to visiting the desert where Lawrence of Arabia made his encampment, Jordan is one of the most fascinatin­g destinatio­ns in the world. This small country has embraced a diverse array of civilisati­ons, and we shall discover Roman remains at Jerash, crusader castles in the desert, and the architectu­re of the Byzantine and Umayyad periods, before unwinding at the Dead Sea.

The Itinerary Wednesday 20th March – arrival at Amman Depart Jordanian Airlines from London Heathrow at 16.05; arrive 23.05 at Amman, where we stay for the first three nights of the tour.

Thursday 21st March – tour of Amman A visit to the city’s Archaeolog­ical Museum in the morning, as well as the ancient citadel in East Amman, will be followed by a drive to the ancient fortress of Qasr al-abd. Talk by Huon Mallalieu. Friday 22nd March – Jerash We will explore Jerash, one of the finest and best-preserved Roman sites. Saturday 23rd March – Mount Nebo and Madaba En route to Petra, we stop at Mount Nebo, from where Moses is said to have first set eyes upon the Promised Land, and on to Madaba. Sunday 24th March – Petra Situated at the end of the Siq is the magnificen­t Treasury of Petra – the beginning of a vast archaeolog­ical site. There will be time to explore the Royal Tombs and Temple of the Winged Lion.

Monday 25th March – Aqaba We visit Aqaba and Wadi Rum where we will explore the dramatic rock formations – known as the Seven Pillars of Wisdom. Tuesday 26th March – The Dead Sea We spend the final night at the Dead Sea. Wednesday 27th March Depart Amman 11.30; arrive London Heathrow 14.45.
