Croatia’s Dalmatian coast

Join the military journalist Robert Fox, who covered the Balkan conflict of the early Nineties, for a fascinating latesummer tour to the Dalmatia Coast of Croatia. Our tour includes the wonderful walled city of Dubrovnik, the Emperor Diocletian’s vast palace at Split and the island of Korčula, claimed as the birthplace of Marco Polo. We will discover thousands of years of history, from Ancient Rome to Tito’s Yugoslavia and the Balkan conflicts of the recent past, as well as enjoying autumn sunshine and delicious local food and wine.
Day 1 – Arrival in Dubrovnik
Fly from Gatwick to Dubrovnik, Croatia’s most iconic city. After checking in to the 4* Hilton Imperial Dubrovnik, we will enjoy a walking tour of the Old Town with a local expert before drinks and dinner at our hotel.
Day 2 – Tour of Dubrovnik
Morning tour of the massive fortifications, which were built between the 12th and 17th centuries, and were never breached by a hostile army. Free time in the afternoon.
Day 3 – Cavtat and the Sokol Tower
Morning guided tour of Cavtat, known for its elegant Renaissance palaces and ancient Illyrian necropolises. We will learn about the local silk industry. Lunch at a local restaurant overlooking the river before we return to Dubrovnik, via the spectacular Sokol Tower.
Day 4 – Island of Korčula
Tour of stunning Korčula, the birthplace of Marco Polo, which is about two hours north of Dubrovnik, including lunch at a local seafood restaurant.
Day 5 – Ston and Split
We will drive up the coast to Split, stopping for lunch at Ston, famous for its oysters. We will check in to the Cornaro Hotel in Split for the final three nights of the holiday.
Day 6 – Diocletian’s Palace, Split
Walking tour of the old Roman centre including Diocletian’s Palace, a vast complex which was constructed in the fourth century. Free afternoon after lunch.
Day 7 – Salona and Trofir
Visit to the Roman ruins at Salona, before we continue to the charming historic city of Trogir where we will enjoy a guided tour, visiting its astonishing 13th-century Romanesque cathedral, after lunch on the harbour.
Day 8 – Depart for home
