THE death of a super-fit teenage boxer is a mystery after he collapsed in the ring seconds after the end of a bout.

Ed Bilbey, 17, had narrowly lost the three-round match on points when he stumbled and fell.

He was pronounced dead on arrival at hospital.

The Board of England Boxing yesterday said it would be looking into the tragedy.

Mr Shinfield said the doctor climbed into the ring to treat Ed before paramedics arrived. He said: “There had been no signs that anything was wrong at all. People were stunned – and then everyone was asked to leave.”

Ed’s boxing brother Henry posted a snap of them together on Facebook, writing: “Love you.” Henry, mum Michelle, and other family were at the event.

Ady Corssen posted: “Absolutely devastated. Seeing Ed lying there is something I will never forget. I can’t even imagine what his opponent is feeling.” The tragedy took place at a leisure centre in South Normanton, Derbys, on Friday night.

Nottingham Forest fan Ed had been fighting for the Somercotes Elite Boxing Academy’s vacant youth welterweight belt. He was taken to Kingsmill Hospital in Sutton-in-Ashfield.

Derbyshire police said: “We’re investigating on behalf of the coroner. There don’t appear to be suspicious circumstances.”

A postmortem will establish the cause of death.
