PHEW... IT AIN’T HALF HOT, MUM

Sunny Mother’s Day leaves Spain cold

- By Stephen Hayward

BRITAIN will be warmer than Spain today as the sun shines for Mother’s Day.

Most of the country is expected to be sunny, with temperatures hitting 14°C (57°F) in some areas by mid afternoon.

By contrast, Madrid is set to be a cool 9°C with Barcelona and Majorca only managing 12° C. The UK Met Office said there will be a cool north-easterly wind in the far south and northern Scotland will see some cloud.

A spokesman said: “It will be a dry, bright day for many areas with lengthy spells of sunshine and som some patchy cloud. However, into the aft afternoon the sunshine will turn hazy.” Tomorrow is also expected to be mainly dry and bright, but rain showers are set to arrive in some parts on Tuesday.

Supermarket chain Asda said demand for Mother’s Day cards has been 60 per cent up on Valentine’s Day card sales. It also says men spend more on gifts for their mothers than on their partners.

Beefburgers have overtaken sausages as Brits’ favourite barbecue food, with a third more thrown on the grill last year, research for The Grocer magazine says.
