Actually, on Comic Relief I didn’t hate romcom

-

I REALISED 14 years ago that the world is divided into two distinct groups – lovers and haters of Love Actually. I belong to the latter. Watching it felt like drowning slowly in a vat of treacle weighed down by several tons of cheese. And what possessed the brilliant Bill Nighy, Alan Rickman and Liam Neeson to appear in such a romcom turkey? (I’m certain they were asking themselves the same thing throughout – you could see it in their eyes.) But somehow Richard Curtis managed to reunite the cast for a ten- minute sequel in aid of Comic Relief, and I was persuaded to sit watch it on Friday. And you know what, I didn’t bring my dinner back up! In fact, I almost got a bit watery-eyed... Perhaps it was the awful events of the week – seeing what horrors hate can bring. I might even give the original movie another try. Because you can’t have too much love, actually, can you?
