Book in for a look at some of the world’

BREAKFAST with nosy giraffes, floating in an open-air pool at 650ft, chilling in a room of ice – hotels have certainly changed.

These are some of the extraordin­ary experience­s available at the world’s craziest hotels. Definitely no identikit mini bars, bland, beige walls or cold, stale croissants at these exotic retreats.

One really cool destinatio­n is the Icehotel in Lapland, Sweden, 125 miles into the Arctic Circle where sleeping bags keep you warm even when room temperatur­es fall to -5C. Here staff have given themselves the challenge of staying open year round.

At the other extreme, at the Mashpi Lodge in Ecuador, guests can “fly” one mile through the jungle canopy in a special glass gondola. And at Giraffe Manor in Kenya, the tall mammals are liable poke their heads in and pinch your food.

Tomorrow on BBC2, restaurant writer Giles Coren and internatio­nal chef Monica Galetti roll up their sleeves to help staff at awe-inspiring hotels to give guests a once-in-a-lifetime stay.

They reveal the tricks of the trade and attention to detail needed to pull off impeccable service and uncover the inspiratio­nal stories of the people who make it all happen. The first hotel under the microscope in the six-part series is the spectacula­r Marina Bay Sands in Singapore.
