Jobs for the week

-

1. Weed war

Using a hoe, chop out the tiny seedlings of annual weeds such as chickweed and groundsel that are beginning to emerge, before they get a foothold.

2. Cane and able

Thin out congested raspberry canes and tie in the newest canes along wires that are fixed at either end to timber posts. Space them 15cm apart.

3. Mulch better

Spread a 5-10cm layer of mulch of well-rotted garden compost around the base of fruit trees, shrubs and roses to help conserve moisture at the roots. Avoid piling the mulch up against their stems, though, as this could cause the bark to rot.
