Care home axed daily

- by Nicola Fifield

MORE than one care home for the elderly and disabled is closing every single day.

Meagre funding by local authorities after years of Tory cuts has led to misery f or t housands, with residents forced to ship out.

In the past year, 2,200 residential places have vanished across England.

Age UK’s Caroline Abrahams said: “If people have to move abruptly from the place they know as home it will cause huge distress and it seriously undermines their health.”

She said a growing number of homes no longer take local authority clients as payments are too small.

“It’s becoming extremely difficult in many areas to find a good, stable place unless they or their family are seriously well off.”

Barbara Keeley, shadow minister for social care, said: “A million older people aren’t getting the care they need.”
