7 sailors lost after ship crash

- By Karen Rockett

SEVEN US Navy crew members are missing after their ship smashed into a giant merchant vessel off the coast of Japan.

Three American sailors were hurt, including USS Fitzgerald’s commanding officer, who was taken to hospital by helicopter. The other two were treated for cuts and bruises.

The destroyer hit the container ship about 60 miles south west of Yokosuka. The Japanese port city is home to the US 7th Fleet, which is made up of 80 submarines and ships, including the Fitzgerald.

It is unclear where the 154m guided missile destroyer ship was heading at the time. The other ship was three times its size, carrying 1,000 containers.

US and Japanese rescue teams were continuing their search for the lost sailors yesterday. There were fears their ship was sinking, but the damage was brought under control. DADS daydream for eight hours a week about being cooler, with fantasies about being a footballer a favourite, a poll found.
